Labor Contract Negotiations

Contract Negotiations

Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association of Southern Nevada (SMACNA) is the duly authorized collective bargaining agent for all contractor members in the sheet metal contracting industry that are signatory to the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Local Sheet Metal Worker’s International Association Local Union 88 (SMART Local 88). SMACNA regards labor relations as one of its single-most influential benefits and services provided to contractor members. The association has forged a close working relationship with union leadership to protect the interests of working men and women, create a level-playing field in the sheet metal workers’ community and deliver the best-trained labor in the industry. It goes without saying that labor and management are bound to disagree, but resolving the conflict in a timely manner enables both parties to stay focused on the end-game, which is to create and sustain a healthy signatory market. If signatory contractors are not profitable in their endeavors, union members suffer.

Together, an appointed team of sheet metal contractor members and the association’s executive vice president, negotiate directly with the union on the following agreements: Standard Form of Union Agreement (SFUA); which includes the Architectural Metals, Food Service and Manufacturing addendums; Service and Maintenance Agreement; Residential Service Contract; and any other agreement that aids contractors in procuring and maintaining market share. Contract negotiations enable management and labor to reach accord on wages, working conditions, dispute mechanisms, safety and training and any other contract provisions needing an overhaul. Should management and labor agree to disagree and reach an impasse in negotiations, SMACNA conducts the necessary preparation to represent its collective bargaining unit of contractors through arbitration.
